The Gospel, as presented in the Scriptures, reveals Jesus Christ as the source and substance of the message of the church. In a world filled with uncertainty, we take refuge in the crucified and risen Lord. He is a perfect and loving Savior, and we can approach Him confidently, receive His mercy and find strength in the Holy Spirit. This is not because of anything we have done, but because of God’s work on our behalf (Eph. 2:8-10). We can rest, trusting that the One who conquered sin and death will uphold us by His power. Being grounded in the gracious gospel of Jesus, as explained in the historical creeds and confessions of the church in the reformed faith, we can be a people who are grounded.
The gospel enables us to love God and others. We can grow in this love because of the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit, who shepherds His people into an unbroken communion with God. “Abide in me, and I in you… for apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:4-5). We can take risks and step out of ourselves because our value and worth is rooted in Christ, not in our own abilities or accomplishments. Christ’s finished work on the cross provides the security and confidence we need to grow in our Christlikeness and to boldly try new things for the sake of the gospel. After all, if God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31-39). Because of this, we are a church that grows.
When God created the cosmos, He called His creation “very good” (Gen. 1:31). Goodness is both an attribute of God Himself (Psalm 34:8) and a command to His people (Isaiah 1:17, Micah 6:8). We seek to cultivate a culture of goodness, kindness, mercy, and justice in our church and beyond. We are a church who strives to be a light to our community by actively working in mission and service with transparency and accountability (one of the bedrocks of the presbyterian form of government). No matter the creed or race, being made in God’s image means that all human life has sacred value and deserves to be treated with respect. As God’s children, we are not merely a means to an end but each have intrinsic worth as image-bearers of our Creator. We are a church that strives to be good.
The mission of our church plant is to cultivate a new community of believers in Goochland, grounded in Christ, growing in love, and committed to doing good.
We are a mission church of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) and a part of the James River Presbytery.
